Use a Pro Roofing Contractor

Roofing is a area of expertise most people don't have. There are so many areas of roofing to consider; flat roofs, piched roofs, GAF roofing materials, roofing around windows, peaks and ridges. These are but a few of the things that make roofing technical.

Flat roofs, for example, follow a different process than pitched roofing. The biggest factor to consider is the water settlement factor. Water settles in various places and when it settles it will find a way to seep through the smallest holes and crevices. Because water will accumulate in large amounts the water damage it can and will create can be severe and costly. I have seen flat roofs collapse because of severe water damage. It's frightening to see what water does to timbers and beams over the years. Water rots the wood to such a degree as to weaken the wood dramatically. Over time the weight bearing beams can no longer take on the weight of the roof and the building or roofing comes tumbling down.

Because of that accumulation factor, flat roofs need much more protection and I personally feel, more expertise for the reasons I mention above. There are many roofing contractors that specialize in only flat roofs and others who won't have anything to do with them. The roofing products associated with flat roofs are generally different than those for other kinds of roofs. For example, a roofing materials such as hot tar are mainly used for flat roofs and rock roofs.

What makes it even more difficult is that flat roofs consist of more vents and generally, big enormous air conditioning units. Anything that sits on the flat roof has to be protected from the weather. Sealing around the seams of the installation are very difficult to keep water tight. The biggest problem is because a building with a flat roof is shifting constantly. It moves with the wind and it moves as the building settles with age and with the settling of the earth. Every time that happens the seals tend to break or loosen. Over time the seals also crack with that settlement. They become brittle and break. Every year or so it is recommended to reseal all vents and seams on a flat roof.

As I look back on the short lived roofing career I had, the ugliest memories are concerning flat roofs. I've lost so much time and money on flat roofs that I did or repaired when I had no business doing them in the first place. Trying to make some extra money, I took on a few flat roof repair jobs. I thought I had found the leaks following the right processes, but once it rained I received calls from the homeowner claiming another leak. It got to the point where I hated answering my phone.

The way to avoid these heartaches is to use a pro roofing contractor. Hire someone who has been in the business for many years. Make sure they use quality roofing materials and products made by GAF. GAF roofing is one of the best known names in the industry. A name whereby you, as a homeowner or business owner can have confidence that only the finest roofing products and materials will be used and only by GAF certified roofers. An investment in a roof is too much money to waste on inferior products and contractors.
